CARRIER OILS

“Carrier oil” is a term often used in the context of aromatherapy, cosmetics, and body care recipes. In simplest terms, “carrier” oils—also sometimes called “base” or “fixed” oils—are neutral oils (they have little to no scent) that are used to dilute essential oils and “carry” them into the skin. In other words, they make pure essential oils safe for use and facilitate their absorption. Carriers can also be lotions, aloe vera gel, witch hazel extract, etc. Carrier oils are usually vegetable oils like coconut oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, etc. made from the nuts, seeds, fruit, or kernels of a plant. On their own, carrier oils contain a variety of skin-nurturing vitamins and nutrients and are excellent at absorbing the additional benefits of infused herbs and essential oil blends. This makes them a perfect vehicle to bring customized benefits to your skin. The constituents in the botanical source of a particular oil, as well as the refinement process (or lack thereof), impact its quality, color, viscosity, and speed of absorption.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are concentrated compounds extracted from aromatic plants to capture that plant’s scent, flavor and natural benefits. You’ll find these highly potent compounds in a plant’s seeds, flowers, bark, roots, leaves, stems, rinds, fruit and resin. As an example, in citrus fruits, essential oils are found inside the peel. There are many who also see essential oils as the essence of a plant, the purest distillation of nature’s living energy. These oils have enhanced lives for thousands of years, with new uses and benefits still being discovered today. Within the plants they’re extracted from, essential oils create that plant’s signature scent along with other benefits. To enjoy these concentrated effects—the benefits of essential oils—you can apply them topically (typically added to other carrier oils, creams and lotions).

HOW THE OILS ARE MADE

COLD-PRESSED

(mainly for carrier oils)

The process involves mechanical or natural extraction. Usually, the clean nut, seed, fruit, or vegetable is ground into a paste and then simply pressed to separate the oil from the pulp. Temperatures are rigorously controlled with this method to ensure they do not exceed 80-90°F. This helps the oil maintain its natural state and beneficial constituents.

DISTILLATION
(mainly for essential oils)

This is a process that involves separating a substance into its constituent parts based on its boiling points or volatility. This delicate and time-sensitive process requires the correct environment and careful attention to detail in order to protect the integrity of the essential oil’s complex chemical profile. The benefit of steam distillation is that it yields oils that are exceptionally clean and pure. It also allows for collection of temperature-sensitive compounds that may be damaged or altered by other collection processes. BUTTERS, WAXES & TALLOW

For centuries, nature’s richest emollients—botanical butters, protective waxes, and nourishing animal-based fats—have been used to hydrate, protect, and restore the skin. From the creamy richness of shea and cocoa butter to the lightweight softness of mango and aloe vera butter, these natural ingredients are packed with vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants that replenish and rejuvenate. Coffee butter, infused with energizing caffeine, brings added circulation-boosting benefits, while natural waxes lock in hydration and shield the skin from environmental stressors. Even beef tallow, once a traditional skincare staple, is being rediscovered for its skin-compatible fatty acids and restorative nutrients. Together, these ingredients provide a holistic approach to skin health, blending deep moisture, barrier support, and natural protection.

BOTANICALS

Botanicals — natural extracts from plants, flowers, herbs, and seeds — have been cherished for centuries as gentle yet powerful remedies for healthy skin. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, botanicals provide nourishment while supporting the skin’s natural functions. They help hydrate and soften dry or rough areas, while their anti-inflammatory properties calm redness, irritation, and sensitivity, making them ideal for delicate or stressed skin.

Many botanicals are also packed with antioxidants, which protect against environmental damage and free radicals that cause premature aging. This helps preserve collagen and elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and keeping skin firm and youthful. Ingredients like chamomile, calendula, and aloe vera are renowned for soothing and healing, while botanicals such as coffee, green tea, and citrus oils help brighten and energize the complexion.

Botanicals also offer clarifying and balancing benefits, thanks to their natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Herbs and spices like basil, cinnamon, and tea tree help reduce breakouts and regulate oil, while floral extracts like jasmine and blue lotus restore hydration and radiance. Beyond their physical effects, many botanicals carry natural aromatherapeutic qualities that reduce stress and promote relaxation, indirectly benefiting the skin as well.

ACTIVES (COSMECEUTICALS)

Active skincare ingredients, often called “actives,” are powerful compounds specifically formulated to deliver visible results and targeted benefits to the skin. Unlike basic moisturizers or oils that mainly hydrate, actives work at a deeper level to address specific concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, dryness, fine lines, and loss of elasticity. Ingredients like alpha arbutin, vitamin C, and niacinamide are celebrated for their brightening effects, helping to fade dark spots, even out skin tone, and restore radiance. Hydrators such as hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and ceramides strengthen the skin barrier, replenish lost moisture, and keep the skin supple and resilient.

Other actives, such as glycolic acid (AHA), encourage gentle exfoliation and cell turnover, leaving the complexion smooth, clear, and refreshed. Anti-aging heroes like peptides, vegan collagen, and niacinamide work to boost collagen production, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and improve firmness over time. Supportive ingredients such as pea protein provide nourishment and protection, further enhancing the skin’s strength and elasticity.

Actives are the powerhouse ingredients in modern skincare. They brighten, hydrate, exfoliate, protect, and repair, ensuring the skin stays healthy, radiant, and youthful when used consistently and appropriately.

EXTRACTS

Botanical and natural extracts are highly valued in skincare for their ability to deliver concentrated nutrients and therapeutic properties directly from plants and other natural sources. Rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients, extracts work to nourish the skin while targeting specific concerns such as dryness, sensitivity, dullness, and premature aging.

Many extracts provide powerful antioxidant protection, helping to neutralize free radicals that damage collagen and elastin, which in turn slows down the visible signs of aging. Others deliver anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits, reducing redness, irritation, and sensitivity — making them especially effective in calming and balancing stressed skin. Extracts like chamomile, calendula, and aloe vera are well known for their ability to restore comfort and promote healing.

Certain extracts also help clarify and brighten the complexion. Ingredients like licorice root, coffee, and green tea can improve uneven skin tone, energize tired skin, and refine texture. Meanwhile, extracts rich in fatty acids, like shea or cocoa, support deep hydration, strengthen the skin barrier, and improve elasticity.
